Disability and neurodivergence

Is it widely identified that people living with disability and neurodiversity face more barriers to accessing healthcare, along with other social services. People with disability represent a large portion of our community and often experience other intersectional factors that exacerbate poor health and wellbeing outcomes.

Seeking to better understanding their healthcare experiences led to our 2024 TALK ABOUT topic, where we sought insights and feedback on the experiences of people with disability in their interactions with primary care services. This information feeds into our Health Needs Assessment, to inform us in the development of relevant strategies and support us in identifying opportunities for improvement.

TalkABOUT: Disability & Neurodiversity

Around 1 in 5 Australians live with disability and around 1 in 3 people with disability in Queensland live with a severe or profound disability. Accessing healthcare may be challenging for disabled people because they face attitudinal, physical, communication and financial barriers via other people and in society.

Queensland Health has developed information and resources to support healthcare professionals in their communications and interactions with people living with a disability.

LGBTIQA+

Recognising the unique health experiences and perspectives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans/transgender, intersex, queer and asexual people and communities across the region is an important part of all commissioned services and engagement opportunities at the PHN. We regularly seek out feedback from the LGBTIQA+ community in our TALK ABOUT series.

Inclusion and feedback

We endeavour to provide information and opportunities in ways that that are accessible to everyone in the community. If you would like any information from the PHN to be provided in a different way—for example Easy English, audio or another language—please let us know by emailing communications@ddwmphn.com.au or calling 07 4615 0900.
