Autumn VaxBus arms community against JEV

April 01, 2025

The Autumn VaxBus is delivering Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) vaccines across the Darling Downs region from 7 to 10 April 2025.

The bus is delivering JEV vaccines for adults, and children two months or older, as a response by the Darling Downs and West Moreton PHN and the Darling Downs and West Moreton Public Health Units to an increased incidence of local detection of the disease in mosquitos in the region.

All vaccines are free, and no Medicare Card is required, but the community are encouraged to bring a form of ID with them.

“We know that flooding leads to an increased exposure to mosquito-borne diseases, so following the impacts of ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, we’re providing the VaxBus to keep our community safe in the most effective way: vaccination,” said Darling Downs and West Moreton PHN CEO Lucille Chalmers.

“With the easter long weekend approaching, we’re encouraging the community to take action now, knowing that these doses can take up to two weeks to become effective after administration,” said Ms Chalmers.

The Autumn VaxBus has eight scheduled stops over four days, and all vaccines will be administered by the Oceana Immunisation team. The schedule has been designed with flexibility in mind to ensure maximum coverage of the community.

“Many of our local general practices are also providing the vaccine, so if you are not able to be at the bus, please check with your practice to see if you can be vaccinated by them,” said Ms Chalmers.

To enquire about in-home vaccinations for vulnerable people, or to confirm the exact time and location of the bus, the community can call 1300 117 792.

While Medicare cards are not required for vaccination, participants will require a legal form of identification which can include a drivers licence or passport.
