Let’s TALK ABOUT Primary Care Workforce

February 24, 2025

TALK ABOUT is a way for Darling Downs and West Moreton PHN to ask you about your experience with healthcare in your community.

Through February to April, we are asking health professionals and the community to provide their feedback on what is working well and what could be done better to support the local health workforce.

In the Darling Downs and West Moreton regions, almost 90% of people in the region attended a general practice in the last year; 40% saw an allied health professional; and 1 in 4 people attended a specialist appointment.

The region also has a lower proportion of medical practitioners and nurses to people; there are 16 per 1000 people in the Darling Downs and West Moreton region, compared to 19 per 1000 across Queensland.

Darling Downs and West Moreton PHN provides information, resources and services to support attracting and retaining GPs and general practice staff in our region.

General Practice Workforce Planning and Prioritisation (WPP) Program:

The General Practice Workforce Planning and Prioritisation (WPP) Program is a long-term project aimed at supporting the transition to college-led GP training through the provision of independent, evidence-based advice to the department and colleges (ACRRM and RACGP) on registrar placement in our region.

It also provides advice on the training capacity and support needs in our region, and a detailed analysis of the various training pathways and recommendations to support the attraction and retention of young rural doctors in the West Moreton and Darling Downs regions.

Local vacancy promotion:

Through the PHN’s online communications portal, practices can also promote any vacancies to the Jobs in Health page.

The PHN is interested in insights from both health professionals and community members, and the survey is open to anyone living in the Darling Downs and West Moreton PHN region.

All consultation findings from our online survey and in-person Kitchen Table Discussions are distributed to external key stakeholders and inform future PHN decision making, targeted service delivery of programs, and provide important updated information for our region’s Health Needs Assessment.

The short confidential online survey is currently open and will close at on Monday, 7 April 2025.
