PHN staff visit Bora Rings and Gummingurru cultural sites
August 30, 2024
Staff from both Ipswich and Toowoomba offices were privileged to visit the Bora Rings and Queens Park on Jagera, Yuggera, and Ugarapul lands, and Gummingurru on Jarowair land.
Staff were guided at all sites by local Traditional Owners to learn about the history and cultural significance of each site as a belated NAIDOC Week activity.
The Bora grounds are sacred Aboriginal places used for tribal gatherings, the conduct of tribal business and initiations. This site is an Aboriginal Bora (or ceremonial) site and was used as a men’s initiation site until about 1890.
Gummingurru is also a site of special cultural significance; a stone arrangement estimated to be around 4,000 years old. PHN staff enjoyed the opportunity to share a yarn on skin and kinship, lore and law, roles, belief systems, and conservation. This activity contributes to our ongoing organisational commitment to reconciliation, guided by our RAP which is available at www.ddwmphn.com.au/reconciliation-action-plan
